FDA launches mobile app to improve access to information about drugs

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has launched a mobile app to increase access to information about drugs, Drugs@FDA Express.

On this app, the public will be able to search for information about FDA-approved brand and generic prescription and over-the-counter human drugs and biological therapeutic products.

Currently, the Drugs@FDA webpage is available for patients to search for information about FDA approved drug products — including patient information, drug labelling, approval letters, reviews and other information. The new mobile app will be a streamlined version of this site, allowing users to search on their mobile devices for certain product information based on product name, active ingredient or application number using a single search box.

Some information, such as labelling supplements and approval letters, will not be available through the app but can still be accessed through the webpage.

Additionally, the app will feature the most recent product approvals, within seven days, links to the Drugs@FDA glossary and frequently asked questions. It will also provide contact information for the FDA’s consumer information office, the Division of Drug Information, druginfo@fda.hhs.gov.

“Consumers are embracing digital health technologies to inform everyday decisions. From fitness trackers to mobile applications tracking insulin administration, these digital tools can empower consumers with a wealth of valuable health information. Advancing mobile apps that inform people about their health and medical choices represents a significant public health opportunity and is a high priority for the FDA,” said FDA commissioner Dr Scott Gottlieb. “The FDA is continuously seeking ways to bring information to consumers in more accessible formats. Today, with the launch of the Drugs@FDA Express mobile app, we’re bringing the public important information about drugs in an easy-to-use, mobile format. We hope that by making this important health information more easily accessible we can help empower patients and providers in making their treatment decisions.”

The app is free to download and is available for Apple and Android devices.
