HERMA launches tamper-evident labelling machine

A tamper-evident labelling machine for the tamper-proof sealing of pharmaceutical packaging has been launched by HERMA.

The system seals folding boxes with transparent labels that are perforated in the centre so packages that have been opened can no longer be resealed without detection, as required by the EU directive 2011/62/EU in 2016. The tuck-in flaps of the folding boxes that must be sealed can be situated either on the top right and bottom left of the box (reverse tuck) or on both sides of the bottom (airplane tuck). In addition to sealing labels, the system can also apply vignette or Bollini labels. A Data Matrix code and an individual serial number are printed on the folding boxes.

The tamper-evident labelling machine reaches a maximum speed of 300 products per minute, making it suitable for the requirements of serialisation.

At the feed-in, the folding boxes are actively aligned and the sealing labels precisely applied. Special sensors and a camera are used to check whether a label has been applied and whether it has been successfully folded over the tuck-in flap. Folding boxes that do not fulfil these criteria or that have been printed with the wrong code are discharged automatically.

The HERMA machine allows the integration of cameras from all major suppliers. Another advantage: the up to three labelling heads are arranged to enable operation from one side, which saves time and space. Similar machines often require the operator to walk around the complete machine or packaging line in order to reach the second labeller.

“This system provides a highly versatile tamper-evident solution for our customers which is suited for current and future requirements,” summarised Martin Kühl, head of HERMA’s Labelling Machines division. “Its small footprint and user-friendly operation are geared towards the increasing requirements of our healthcare customers.”
