Making it count: Key innovations on show at this year’s Interphex meeting, day 3

As this year’s Interphex draws to an end, we take a look at some more of the developments from the exhibition show floor in the Javits Center in New York…

Electromagnetic flow meter

KROHNE is highlighting its electromagnetic flowmeter with biocompatible disposable flow tube specifically developed for single use biopharmaceutical applications, including filtration processes, chromatography, or buffer and media preparation.

The FLEXMAG 4050 C flow meter features high accuracy and factory calibration that eliminates the need for in-situ calibration. Additionally, it includes a biocompatible and gamma sterilisable disposable flow tube.

As an electromagnetic meter, the FLEXMAG 4050 C will not drift over time. It provides a stable, direct and accurate volumetric flow measurement, unaffected by fluid properties such as colour or density.

The flow tube uses a single barb fitting that meets biopharmaceutical requirements for adaptation to single use systems. The tube’s full-bore construction is designed for minimal hold-up volume without obstruction, and the single barb fitting is suitable for braided as well as non-braided hoses.

Disposable single use flow tubes are packed in double sealed individual pouches, and the transmitter can accommodate two different flow tubes sizes. This gives end users the flexibility to handle two different flow ranges by simply exchanging the tube— without having to re-calibrate.

Compliant data archiving software

Machine vision integrator, Integro Technologies, is showcasing its FDA 21 CFR Part 11 compliant user traceability and data archiving solution, VisionVault, at this year’sshow.

“Integro Technologies is excited to showcase our VisionVault software for 21 CFR Part 11 compliance,” says Starke Farley, senior sales engineer for Integro Technologies. “The solution provides full traceability for a Cognex In-Sight install base that is searchable from any web browser on the network. Using MS Active Directory for user authentication, the system provides data regarding who logged in, what terminal they logged in from, what changes they made, and if they saved the file or just ‘tested’ a new setup.”

VisionVault provides the data archiving and traceability solutions to comply with FDA requirements for:

Washing, filling and closing equipment

Provider of machinery for the packaging industry, Cozzoli Machine Company will be exhibiting washing, filling and closing equipment at this year’s event.

Featured machines include the RPF8 Rotary Piston Filler, the FSV50 Mini Monoblock, the GW24 Ampule/Vial Batch Washer and the PF2-IS Powder Filler. The company will also be showing its tabletop F400XSS Liquid Filler.

Cozzoli’s RPF Rotary Piston Fillers are fully automatic machines, most recently designed to accommodate the different viscosities in cough syrups. The RPF is available in different frame sizes and models; the standard 2.75" diameter cylinders and pistons provide fill ranges of 5 to 21 fluid ounces, with 4 to 36 filling nozzles and speeds of 60 to 540 CPM. Overhead driven pistons feature a fine fill adjustment, achieving ±0.5% fill accuracy and are easily removed for cleaning and changeover.

The FSV50 Mini Monoblock is a small, high performance machine designed for processing vials in laboratory, clinical production locations or other areas with limited space. It is designed for use in a cleanroom environment, with hood isolation and laminar flow in mind. Designed to fill liquids or powders, then stopper or cap the containers at speeds up to 50 vials per minute, the Mini Monoblock is capable of covering a range of vial sizes from 1 mL to 100 mL.

The Cozzoli GW24 Batch Washer is a high production vial and ampule cleaning machine. Using a PLC to control the wash cycle, the wash parameters can be programmed into the machine for individual wash cycles. Up to 19 different wash recipes of 99 steps each provide for individualised customer requirements. All wash recipes can be password protected.

The company’s PF2-IS Powder Filler is designed to promote the highest level of performance for accuracy, repeatability and easy cleaning. Totally enclosed product pathway with no abrading parts ensures zero powder contamination. Fine tuning fill-volume adjustments can be made on the fly without tools. This machine is configured for use in an isolator.

The F400X-SS Single Piston Filler is your machine for filling liquids at low production rates with high accuracy. Fills aqueous solutions to light oils, easy to clean and sterilise, and is designed for rapid changeover. Shipped fully assembled and ready to use.

Compact and modular pharmaceutical feeder design

Coperion K-Tron is introducing the next generation of its highly accurate pharmaceutical loss-in-weight screw feeders at Interphex this year.

On their booth, Coperion and Coperion K-Tron will focus on both continuous and batch processes and their newest innovative solutions for optimal feeding and refill accuracy, while demonstrating how they provide single source solutions for extrusion, feeding and conveying applications in the pharmaceutical and nutraceutical industries.

Exhibits on display include the new K3-PH loss-in-weight feeders (QT20 and QT35), as well as micro-ingredient feeder (MT12) with interchangeable twin and single screw feeding modules, P10 vacuum sequencing sanitary powder receiver and the hygienic low capacity ZZB rotary valve, a perfect design for pharmaceutical applications.

The new K3-PH feeder design features a modular concept, complete with a reduced overall footprint, thanks to a smaller D4 platform scale incorporating the patented and accurate Smart Force Transducer (SFT) weighing technology. The new D4 platform scale features the same state-of-the-art sanitary design of the established Coperion K-Tron D5 scale. Smooth, crevice free surfaces, prevent deposit of dust and product residue and enable easy cleaning.

At the heart of the new D4 scale, Coperion K-Tron’s patented SFT single wire weighing technology provides an accurate weight signal with a resolution of 1:4,000,000 in 80 ms. The advanced electronics include linearisation, temperature compensation and a digital low-pass filter to reduce the effect of plant vibration. The 100% digital design eliminates the need for calibration.

The feeder’s modular quick change design allows the easy exchange of feeder types and sizes as well as hoppers or agitators using the same scale & drive for fast adaptation to new processes and formulations while also ensuring easy cleaning and maintenance.

The new modular pharmaceutical feeder design includes several innovative modifications, all engineered as a result of in-depth market studies with end users in the pharmaceutical industry. The quick change feeder bowl, agitator and screw combinations which can be quickly decoupled from the feeder drive provide for easy and fast changeover and cleaning of the feeders. By opening two clamps the feeder bowl can be released and replaced by a clean one for running a new product. The three available Coperion K-Tron feeder types QT20, QT35 and QS60, both twin and single screw, can be used with the same scale and drive combination.

The new modular K3-PH line concept is designed to provide for a cluster arrangement of 6 or more feeders to meet these complex requirements. The complete line of equipment is engineered to meet the rigid requirements of the pharmaceutical industry, including strict adherence to cGMP guidelines and standards as well as the use of FDA approved materials of construction.

The new Coperion K-Tron K3-PH line of pharmaceutical design loss-in-weight feeders includes proven instrumentation, controls and optimized design options for continuous feeding of difficult flowing pharmaceutical excipients and API’s. Depending on the application, the new pharmaceutical feeder line can be outfitted with a variety of ancillary options including the innovative ActiFlow bulk solids activator, a material flow aid for feeding difficult flowing materials, as well as Electronic Pressure Compensation (EPC). EPC is a unique instrumentation package which can optimize feeder performance in continuous operations such as blending, extrusion, granulation and coating. The pharmaceutical feeders are available in volumetric and gravimetric, single and twin screw models.
