Processing it all, day 1 — some of the key innovations from the show floor at ACHEMA 2018

As thousands of visitors flock to Frankfurt for the world forum and leading show for the process industries, we take a sneaky peek at some of the innovations that will be on offer from exhibitors in the huge Frankfurt Messe for ACHEMA 2018.

Taking a fresh look at pharma manufacturing

At this year’s ACHEMA, European Pharmaceutical Manufacturer (EPM) will be distributing and showcasing the latest issue, which now features a refreshed look and feel.

Including content covering regulatory affairs, anti-counterfeiting, big data, sterile packaging, tablet production and much more, the new look magazine will be available at the European Pharmaceutical Manufacturer stand — Hall 4.1 foyer, Booth A43.

Visitors to the stand will also be able to subscribe to receive the latest content from the authoritative voice of the pharmaceutical manufacturing industry.

Time for change with Quick-Release Tooling

During this year’s ACHEMA show, Natoli Engineering will be showcasing its new Quick-Release Tooling, designed to mitigate the operational differences between R&D and production presses.

Each tooling set comes with a punch barrel, three interchangeable heads (standard head flat, extended head flat and complete dome) and one customisable punch tip. The three heads can be swapped without the need of any additional tools and the tooling enables R&D teams to test different dwell times during the research process without having to buy any additional equipment.

Through facilitating interchangeability of punch heads, R&D teams can more easily evaluate dwell times with respect to both press speeds and head flat profiles, which are critical components of dwell time. This in turn allows for a more detailed analysis of a formulation’s compressibility as well as greater troubleshooting capacity in the early development stages.

New steam steriliser series

Global provider of innovative medical technology, Getinge, will be launching its new GSS Steam Sterilizer series for the life sciences industry at ACHEMA 2018.

This flagship series is specifically designed for use by companies in the life science industry and is available in two different versions — GSS R for biomedical research and GSS P for pharmaceutical production.

“We designed our new GSS Steam Sterilizer series from the ground up to meet the specific needs of organizations involved in biomedical research and pharmaceutical and biotech drug discovery and development,” said Jens Knobe, vice president of Business Development, Life Science, Getinge. “This new generation of steam sterilizers is fully aligned with the needs of organizations conducting biomedical research and producing pharmaceuticals. They offer improved lead time and documentation, and are customizable, reliable, fast and precise – features and attributes that are of critical importance to companies and laboratories working in the life science industry.”

The new GSS Steam Sterilizers are available in a range of sizes and offer a set of options to adapt to customers’ individual needs. They are designed to reduce lead times and are Good Automated Manufacturing Practices (GAMP)-5 compliant.

Smart monitoring technology

Powder containment and aseptic transfer valve specialist, ChargePoint Technology is revealing its unique smart monitoring hub to support efficiency and safety within chemical and pharmaceutical manufacturing processes.

The new VERIFI solution will be on show at ACHEMA, which offers manufacturers an automatic/reliable method of understanding the health status of the device allowing them to better control risk and ensure consistent integrity throughout the lifecycle of the system and its critical components.

The new solution is connected directly to the company’s Active valve unit and so continuously records data and delivers alerts to its users. The LED display provides operators with visual feedback, giving users the confidence and also affording the safety and quality teams peace of mind. Service advice allows maintenance teams to take preventative action, resulting in less downtime and improved efficiency.

Additionally, data can be synchronised via wifi to the secure VERIFI Portal, where data is stored in the cloud for production and process managers to analyse remotely and export for further reporting.

“Meeting the increasing pressures that exist in a production environment can be a challenge, including not only managing the risks associated with Industrial Hygiene and Quality but also meeting operational efficiency targets too,” stated Ben Wylie, product and channel marketing manager of ChargePoint. “This unique technology that we are launching reinforces our commitment to continuously adapting to market challenges and offering such advancements to our customers is something that we are extremely proud of. We have experienced a growing demand for our containment technologies globally over the past 12 months. As the ‘biotech boom’ and the use of high potency APIs continues, we can continue to invest in this market, offering safe and efficient material transfer solutions.

“Not only are we seeing enormous support for our new monitoring technology but our split butterfly valve (SBV) is growing in popularity worldwide, with the industry adopting it as an alternative to more cumbersome and costly containment solutions.”

New offerings and joint development partnership

During 2018 ACHEMA, Bentley Systems will announce the general availability of OpenPlant CONNECT Edition, which enables a greater collaboration among individuals across the enterprise and teams.

Members of the Bentley team will demonstrate the OpenPlant CONNECT Edition at the booth, where attendees will also be able to preview reality modelling-enabled visual operations.

This new offering helps owner-operators of industrial sites, substations, transportation assets, and telecommunication towers streamline their operations and decrease inspection costs. Additionally, it provides performance digital twins that effectively documents brownfield conditions and spatially links asset information, providing the ‘where’ to asset management.

French expertise and innovation on show

In Frankfurt for ACHEMA 2018, 31 French companies and organisations will be presenting their expertise and innovations to the global scientific and business community.

Business France, the national agency for the international development of the French economy, is organising the French pavilion at the world’s biggest trade show for the chemical process industry and biotechnologies.

The chemical industry in France (based on figures from the Union des Industries Chimiques for 2017) has a €70 billion turnover and is second in Europe only behind Germany. It is one of the main sectors contributing to France’s positive trade balance of more than €8.6 billion and is the leader in the industrial export sector. There are 3,335 businesses, nearly all (94%) of which are micro-enterprises/SMEs. R&D spend stands at €1.8 billion and there is also €3.1 billion worth of investments.

Innovation

In the engineering hall (9.2), Axelera, the regional Rhônes-Alpes innovation cluster for the chemical and environmental sectors will be exhibiting with SMEs and the Institut Carnot Chimie Balard Cirimat.

For investors…

Representatives from several French chemical parks will also be demonstrating how their sites are attractive destinations for foreign investors’ European development projects in the chemical and environmental sectors. 10 chemical parks will be exhibiting on a shared stand (hall 9.2, stand D12) with the aim of attracting new investments from major players or start-ups wishing to industrialise their innovations.
