Processing it all, day 3 — some of the key innovations from the show floor at ACHEMA 2018

As we enter the midway point of the massive ACHEMA 2018 exhibition and congress, we look at some more of the big news coming from the exhibitors on the show floor…

New freeze dryer and much more…

Bosch Packaging Technology is presenting its newly developed freeze dryer at ACHEMA 2018, along with much more.

The new lyophilisation system, developed at the company’s Austrian subsidiary Schoeller-Bleckmann Medizintechnik (SBM), can be used to stabilise thermolabile and delicate active ingredients, like oncological medications, vaccines or antibodies.

“Short time-to-market, high quality and cost efficiency are key for pharmaceutical manufacturers. Our new freeze dryer is not only energy efficient, but also offers short cycle times together with reliable product quality in large batches,” explains Annabel Madero, product manager at SBM. “During the development of the system, we attached particular importance to optimum space design to make processing and cleaning times as effective as possible. At the same time, energy efficiency was also a high priority.”

The shelves in the system were produced using laser welding technology, ensuring a controlled, automated and reproducible manufacturing process, essential for consistent and reliable product quality. Moreover, by using thinner sheets, the weight of the shelves has been significantly reduced compared to alternative production processes. Thanks to this weight reduction, less mass has to be cooled and heated, which has a positive effect on energy consumption.

Another advantage of the system is the homogenous temperature distribution in the shelves. The internal channeling and flow velocity were optimised on the especially developed test bed to ensure consistent heat exchange.

The new freeze dryer is designed so that customers can use different container sizes and formats.

Additionally, the company is showcasing its comprehensive range of solutions.“We combine mechanical engineering expertise and extensive pharmaceutical know-how in a unique way. This leads to customised solutions for a wide variety of markets and requirements,” says Uwe Harbauer, member of the executive management and head of the pharma business unit at Bosch Packaging Technology. “Divided into the Pharma Liquid and Pharma Solid World, we will show market novelties and portfolio expansions, digital solutions and services, which together result in optimally harmonised systems for all our customers’ production processes.”

Validated fluid path solutions to reduce risk

The group product compliance manager at Watson-Marlow Fluid Technology Group, Sade Mokuolu, PhD, will deliver a presentation today (13 June) focusing on how to reduce risk in the product development process through the use of validated fluid path solutions.

Taking place at 4 pm in Hall CMF ‘Harmonie 1’ as part of the Process analytical technology - Bio-chemical processes II event, Mokuolu will detail how to qualify single-use (SU) assemblies consisting of tubing, connectors, gaskets and clamps into custom end-to-end fluid paths simplifying compliance with the latest industry regulations and GMP requirements.

“There is intense debate on extractables between suppliers and end-users of SU components,” she remarks. “Knowledge of extractables profiles can aid risk assessment strategies considerably and profiles can be used to understand whether there are components of potential concern. My presentation provides an essential forum for learning and discussion on an important topic that impacts on users’ ability to meet stringent regulatory compliance.”

Additionally, the presentation will highlight the methodology and the range of analytical techniques used to provide an extractables profile for fluid contact SU components.

Furthermore, the company will be featuring new products on the booth, including the Quantum peristaltic pump for single-use downstream bioprocessing, Flexicon PF7 aseptic liquid filler, tamper evident BioPure Q-Clamp for single-use Tri-Clamp applications, and an expanded range of high purity gaskets, valves and hoses.

Live demos of serialisation solutions

During ACHEMA, Adents — provider of serialisation and track & trace solutions, will be demonstrating its two signature pharmaceutical serialisation solutions, Adents Seriza and Adents Prodigi.

Demos at Adents’ booth will feature its two mainstay track & track systems. Incorporating various subsets of Adents’ track & trace platform, the fully configurable, standardised Adents Seriza solution provides unprecedented levels of flexibility and scalability for pharmaceutical manufacturers and packagers. Adents Seriza will be showcased on two machines: A semi-automatic Travtec Travino desktop serialisation unit for printing and reading serialised data on both flat and erected cartons; and a Germark labeling machine specially designed for the pharma sector.

Adents Prodigi will be demonstrated using a recently launched demo tool that guides users through various ‘if/then’ scenarios.

“Both Adents Seriza and Adents Prodigi show how pharma manufacturers can address the challenges of connecting multiple trading partners, managing dozens of countries’ regulations, and capitalizing on serialization data,” says Christophe Devins, CEO of Adents. “Additionally, it will be exciting to reveal a promising new solution developed in partnership with our colleagues at Siemens.”

Packaging solutions for pharma and healthcare

Schubert-Pharma will be presenting a cross-section of its packaging solutions for the pharmaceutical and healthcare industries during the 2018 ACHEMA event.

For the first time, the expert audience will be able to see the latest generation of the Flowmodul flow-wrapping unit in action, packing BFS ampoules into flowpacks at the exhibition. The Flowmodul unit has a fully automatic carrier change with replaceable cassettes for other formats. The entire forming shoulder is changed when the format changes. This guarantees safety when changing films and reliable reproducibility of the flowpack geometry

Additionally, Schubert-Pharma will provide information about the extensive possibilities TLM technology and the integration of external units can add to your processes and functions. And, the company will also be presenting its extensive portfolio of engineering services.

Extensive portfolio of serialisation solutions

At its booth in Frankfurt, the WIPOTEC Group will present an extensive portfolio of integrated serialisation solutions for Track & Trace projects which will reportedly meet global serialisation regulations in the shortest possible time.

TQS Fast Track (Traceable Quality System) solutions provide CMOs and pharmaceutical companies with an extremely fast way to achieve FMD compliance. The portfolio presented at ACHEMA includes the full range of modular systems for the serialisation, aggregation and tamper-evident packaging of individual folding boxes and HDPE pharmaceutical containers through to the entire pallet. Across the whole production process, open XML interfaces ensure flexibility when connecting to different level 3 providers.

Leading level 3 partners of WIPOTEC-OCS will offer their assistance at the booth on all issues relating to the unobstructed exchange of data between production, warehousing systems and the enterprise systems.

The focus at the 175 square metre, two-storey ACHEMA booth of the WIPOTEC Group will be on live demonstrations of TQS Fast Track solutions.

There will also be a large number of checkweighers suitable for the pharmaceutical industry on show and ready for demonstration at the WIPOTEC booth.

Experts from WIPOTEC will be on hand every day of the ACHEMA trade fair to answer questions on Track & Trace projects, the TQS Fast Track serialisation platform as well as checkweighers and weigh cells suitable for the pharmaceutical industry.
