Data security for innovative cancer therapies
Innovative cell therapies are often the last but most promising form of treatment for cancer patients. However, such procedures are highly complex and involve the exchange of sensitive patient data between many stakeholders. With Hypertrust X-Chain, the CAMELOT Consulting Group offers a blockchain-based solution that ensures a high level of security for the storage and sharing of patient data for autologous extracorporeal cell treatment. This solution was presented for the first time at the LogiPharma conference.
“Since highly innovative extracorporeal cell therapies are often the last hope for many patients, there is no room for error in the entire process. That is why we have come up with a digital application that not only ensures maximum data-sharing and data-storage security, but also focuses on the patient,” said Dr Josef Packowski, CEO of CAMELOT Consulting Group, with regard to the motivation to develop the innovative Hypertrust X-Chain application. “As consulting specialists for the digitalization of pharmaceutical and healthcare value chains, the need here was clear to us.”
Extracorporeal cell therapies involve the removal of cells from the patient, which are then deep-frozen for transport to the pharmaceutical manufacturer. There, they are processed in an elaborate, multi-stage process before being refrozen and sent back to be reimplanted in the patient on-site.
Many different stakeholders, such as the treating clinic, the cell collection centre, logistics service providers and pharmaceutical companies are involved in this process. Most of the important data continues to be transmitted in analogue form and then rerecorded over the course of the process. The risk of erroneous data and data abuse is thus extremely high.
Hypertrust X-Chain works through a closed-loop supply chain approach. This ensures that there are no mistakes throughout the process: from collecting the cells, processing them, transporting them between the stakeholders, and returning the ‘right cells’ to the ‘right patients’.
In accordance with legal data protection guidelines, the relevant patient data is made available to the stakeholders authorised for the therapy process on the basis of the blockchain technology by means of a decentralised data storage. All data transactions take place exclusively between verified participants and are immutably and consistently stored by means of encryption in the blockchain.
In addition, Hypertrust X-Chain enables the flexible integration of partner systems, real-time temperature, location and quality controls as well as secure guarantees of origin. Combined with the appropriate hardware (Camelot Trusted Computing Appliances), it also ensures that decentrally stored private data actually remain private.

Complete compliance solution
During LogiPharma 2018, Inexto presented SerialTrac — its latest pharma solution for compliance that meets all the requirements of current and impending pharma serialisation legislation.
SerialTrac has been designed to allow turnkey installation on secondary packaging lines. It is equipped to handle both internally- and externally-generated serial numbers and also offers aggregation functionality as standard, including post-manufacture rework and repacking — essential to any pharmaceutical manufacturing process. Its patented data compression techniques reduce the reliance on large, cumbersome and expensive databases. A high degree of standardisation means that Inexto is able to offer SerialTrac as a cost-effective, scalable compliance tool which can be rapidly installed.
“Over the years, through our involvement with Inexto Suite we have come to recognize just how formidable a serialization solution it really is — and hence its potential for the pharmaceutical sector,” explained Philippe Chatelain, CEO of Inexto. “By featuring the very specific requirements and processes from the pharma industry, we have built a powerful SerialTrac solution that goes beyond regulatory compliance to address the true issue of the pharma industry and life science sector: falsified medicines, diversion, supply chain integrity control, product recall simplification and patient care. We've augmented for the pharmaceutical sector a system that's already been running for 15 years in the tobacco industry.”
