Non-Contact Measuring System Provides Simple Yet Reliable Tablet Tooling Inspection

With regards to tablet quality, it is the tooling along with the press that determines if a tablet is good or not. After each batch, the tooling should go through a number of QA and cleaning steps. This is needed to prepare the set for the next usage and evaluate the quality of punches and dies for integrity.

Inspection is one of the QA procurers, and the user-friendly ADAMUS HT Pi-1 measuring system is used to inspect tablet tooling in the pharmaceutical and supplemental industries. Non-contact measurements are taken to within <1 µm, and the results are compared with Adamus’s library of current industry standards determining the integrity of the punch. All of the results are stored in the software and can be made available for further evaluation.

One of the main features of the Pi-1 is the placement of the tool for inspection. The system allows the operator to place the tool in an upright, free-standing position, without the need for clams or other hold-down devices. This allows the entire surface to be exposed for measuring. A new confocal measuring technique, as opposed to the traditional triangulation method, is then used to measure distance. Confocal technology uses multi-lense optics, allowing for light waves to conduct extremely precise measurements.

An additional step that should be carried out is polishing. The robust and sturdy ADAMUS HT PM 300-500 drag polisher provides a validated method of polishing the entire set of tooling. It swirls the tooling in a polishing media, assuring the entire surface of the tooling is polished.
